YouTube Thumbnail Downloader

Paste a YouTube link and save the video’s cover image as a JPG in the largest size YouTube has — usually 1280×720 HD. Works for regular videos and Shorts alike.

What this tool does

Every YouTube video has a thumbnail — the cover picture shown in search results, recommendations and on the channel page. YouTube keeps it in several sizes, from a tiny 120×90 preview up to the full-size image the creator uploaded. This tool finds the largest version that exists for your video and gives it to you as an ordinary JPG file.

People save thumbnails to collect references for their own channel design, to put a cover into a playlist, a presentation or a blog post about the video, to recover their own artwork when the original file is lost, or simply to look at a cover in full size instead of squinting at a small card.

Nothing is downscaled or recompressed into something worse: you get the same pixels YouTube shows, saved as JPG so any phone, photo editor or browser opens it straight away.

Why 1280×720 is the usual size: YouTube recommends that creators upload custom covers at exactly that resolution, so most channels do. When a creator does not upload a cover, YouTube picks a frame from the video itself, and then the largest size available depends on the quality of the video.

How to save a thumbnail on your phone

  1. In the YouTube app, tap Share under the video (or on a Short) and choose Copy link.
  2. Open this page in your mobile browser and paste the link into the field at the top.
  3. The thumbnail option is already selected in the list of formats — its size is shown right next to it.
  4. Tap Download. On iPhone, open the file in Files and choose Share → Save Image to add it to Photos. On Android the picture appears in Downloads and in your gallery.

How to save a thumbnail on a computer

  1. Copy the video address from the browser bar on youtube.com.
  2. Paste it here; the analysis starts by itself.
  3. Keep the thumbnail selected — or switch to a video or audio format if that is what you need.
  4. Click Download. The JPG is saved under the video’s title.

Honest limits

  • Size: the best version YouTube has, usually 1280×720 (HD). Some older or rarely watched videos only have 640×480 or 480×360 — we will not upscale those and call them HD.
  • Format: JPG. YouTube also serves WebP copies, but JPG opens everywhere, so that is what you get.
  • The thumbnail is whatever the creator chose; we cannot remove text, faces or logos from it.
  • Thumbnails of private or deleted videos are not available.

YouTube thumbnail downloader FAQ

The largest one YouTube has for that video. Most of the time that is 1280×720, which is HD. The exact size is shown next to the option before you download.

Yes. Paste a youtube.com/shorts/… link — the tool handles it just like a regular video and gives you the cover image YouTube stores for that Short.

Because YouTube has no bigger version: the video is old, the creator uploaded a small image, or YouTube generated the cover automatically from a low-resolution frame. We do not enlarge images artificially — that would only make them blurrier.

It is free and needs no account. Paste a link and get the picture — no email, no password, no captcha.

A thumbnail is part of someone else’s content and is protected by copyright. Download it for personal use — as a reference, to archive your own covers, or with the author’s permission. Putting another creator’s thumbnail on your video or using it in advertising requires their consent.

Now and then YouTube restricts access for download services for a while. When that happens, we say so plainly instead of showing a vague error. You can see the current state of every platform on our Status page (easydownloads.net/status) and try again a little later.

Yes. The same list for that link also offers video in MP4 and audio in M4A or MP3 — switch to the option you need and press Download.

No, we add nothing. You get the cover exactly as viewers see it on YouTube.
